Male menopause

About 20 percent of men suffer from menopausal complaints, just like women. Sleep problems, erection problems, reduced libido, hot flashes and depression can be complaints that are related to menopause.

The male menopause is called andropause, a more popular name for the male menopause is penopause.

Men between the ages of 40 and 50 can also suffer from changes in their hormone levels. The complaints are different for each man and some will suffer more than the other. Certain complaints, both physical and mental, are more common in this age group.

Bone decalcification and reduction of muscle strength are the physical consequences of a decreasing testosterone level that men in this age group can deal with. Other known penopause symptoms that men can deal with in the menopause are obesity, sleep problems, sweating, fatigue and hair loss.

Mental consequences of the male menopause may be emotional instability and a deterioration of memory. It also makes it more difficult for men in the penopause to learn new things, because learning capacity deteriorates. Depression, mood swings and a negative self-image are other complaints that also regularly occur in men during menopause.

For men, the menopause can also have a major impact on their sexuality. Reduced libido and erection problems can be complaints that these men are confronted with between the ages of 40 and 50. The erection becomes less hard and firm and it can take longer to come. Also the amount of sperm released during ejaculation becomes less and the power of ejaculation decreases.

Treatment for these menopausal symptoms is possible. In case of serious complaints, hormone therapy can be a solution. In the case of serious mental complaints a doctor can consider prescribing antidepressants. Male can also tackle the menopause complaints by changing their lifestyle. More exercise, less alcohol, a healthy weight and the avoidance of stress can cause the symptoms to diminish or eventually disappear.
